Hi!
I worked on a project at my MIL's while she was away with K. I re-did her kitchen table! It's something she's been wanting to do for a while since the finish was chipping off and there were places where the stain had worn off, making it look spotty.
I took no pics, but here's what I did in case I want to remember:
- Thursday-10;00 Move table outside.
- Use Fine Wood Stripper to remove shellac or epoxy or whatever was on there.
- Scrap off with plastic scrapper.
- Use hand sander to sand- 80 grit, 150, then 220.
- Hand sand with 220 to smooth.
- 3:00 Wipe with damp tshirt cloth.
- Bring table inside.
- Test 7 different stains on corners. (Go to Canadian Tire 3 times and Home Hardware once!) Finally find match-Gunstock!
- Fri- Talk MIL into letting me do the leaves.
- Sat-11:30 Take table back outside.
- Prepare leaves (See steps 1-7).
- Condition wood with wood conditioner- Wipe on with tshirt cloth.
- Let dry 15 minutes.
- 2:00 Put first coat of stain on with t-shirt rag.
- Let dry 4 hours.
- 6:00 Put second coat of stain on.
- Let dry 24 hours.
- Monday- 9;00 Lightly sand with 220.
- Wipe with Paint thinner.
- Wipe with tack cloth.
- Put first coat of Wipe On Polyurethane.
- Let dry 3 hours.
- 12:00 Lightly sand with 220.
- Wipe with tack cloth.
- Put second coat of poly.
- Let dry 4 hours.
- 4:00 (Drive back to town.)
- Lightly sand with 220.
- Wipe with tack cloth.
- Put third coat of poly.
- Let dry overnight.
- Tuesday- 9;00 Lightly sand with 220.
- Wipe with tack cloth.
- Put fourth coat of poly.
- Let dry 3 hours.
- 12:00 Lightly sand with 220.
- Wipe with tack cloth.
- Put fifth coat of poly.
- Let dry overnight.
- Wednesday- 9:00 Lightly sand with 220.
- Wipe with tack cloth.
- Put sixth coat of poly.
- Let dry 3 hours
- 12:00 Lightly sand with 220.
- Wipe with tack cloth.
- Put seventh coat of poly.
- Let dry overnight.
- Thursday- 9:00 It's done! Wipe down.
- Clean up!
It was a pretty good project. I think it turned out well. :-)
