Box (Kreg Jig Project #4)

Hi!  How's your Hump Day going?
Mine is good!
It's sunny, but cold- Neg 8C (17F) with a windchill of Neg 16C (3F)!

The other week, C got decided she didn't need her doll house/book shelf anymore.
This is how it looked when it was all set up as a dollhouse.

The top part had been removed when C wanted to use it as just shelves.

Why did C want to get rid of such nice shelves?
Well, she needed an empty wall to practice hand stands!

So, K and I took the shelves apart and left the pieces in the hallway for a bit.

Then, I decided to make a simple box for shoes, to go under the front room lockers.
And I used the Kreg Jig!

Luckily, these pieces didn't need cutting!  I just kreg jigged the top and bottom to the sides and one middle divider. I didn't even bother to re-paint it.  This is the bottom so you don't actually see the windows and door painted on!

Here's underneath the first set of lockers.
(I'm noticing I still need to paint the side and put in baseboards...)

This is the box, with shoes in it. It's hard to see, but there are boots on top of the box.
It slides all the way to the wall.

In front of it, is another shoe holder.

I have two other boxes to make to hang up in the front room closet.
However, these pieces have to be trimmed. Plus, I have to install the 3/8" plywood wall before I can get them up, so I haven't made them yet!

Have a great day! :-)

Shelves, etc.

Hi!

We had another snow day yesterday!  Now it's back to school...

C has been wanting shelves above her desk for a while now. She wanted to get rid of the secretary insert on top of the desk so she'd have more desk top space.  I finally got around to making the shelves last weekend.  I used the leftover birch plywood from the bench in the old front room.  Last summer, my dad had cut this plywood so I could build the benches under the front room lockers.  But, I decided they should be cushioned, so I ended up using different (not so nice) plywood.
So, I used the nice birch plywood for C's shelves!
We primed and painted the shelves on the weekend.  The desk top had a bunch of permanent marker marks on it, so it got primed and re-painted on the weekend, too. I put the shelves up while C was at school on Monday and she was very pleased to see them up when she got home! I used the brackets from the shelves that are now sitting under the recycling. (Those shelves were nice, but they weren't quite long enough to use above the desk.) I put a small shelf from the storage room on the bottom so she'd have room for pens, pencils, etc.  I wasn't sure if it should get painted, but for now it's staying as is.

C rearranges her room often, but this is how her room looked January, 2015.
Her desk had been moved to where the bookshelf is now. You can see the secretary insert on the back of the desk.

N wanted more desk top space, so he got the other birch plywood piece cut to fit beside his desk.
It sits on top of a shelf unit.

Here's how this corner looked in May, 2015.

I put up another little shelf from the storage room for Pokemon stuff.

Before, it was just a blank wall.

It's nice to get these little projects done (and use up some materials!)

Enjoy the rest of your week! :-)

Spray Painting

Hi!

I did a couple spray painting projects this past week.

In the background of this selfie C took, is our knife holder.
It used to be on it's side at an angle, but I removed a piece and put it upright when I moved it from the top of the fridge.  When I saw this pic and noticed how funny it looks half painted, I decided to spray paint it Nickel (Satin by Krylon).
Much better!

Then C decided she wanted her dresser knobs and name letters silver, too, but I'd run out of paint. So, we picked up some new super shiny Metallic Silver (Brilliant ColorMaster by Krylon) at Walmart.
We still need to paint the drawers white.

Here are the white knobs.

Here are the new silver letters!
I don't have a before pic of the letters, but they used to be the same blue as the walls.

Hope you're having a great weekend! :-)

Girl's Room Closet

Hi!

Well, I finally got the closet finished in C's room!  It's not that exciting, but here's how it looks now.

And here's how it used to look.

Update (I can't believe it's August already!)

Hi!  Wow, I can't believe it's almost been 2 weeks since I've posted!  Busy, Busy Busy!!

What have we been doing?
K's been working usual hours (with some overtime this weekend);
I've worked a couple times;
we started getting the Veggie Box (local CSA) on Mondays;
C went to Camp Keir for 5 nights;
on the way home from dropping her off we stopped at a honey stand.

 The week C was at camp, N went to see "Pixels" with friends;
he went to St. Chrysostome beach with my parents
and clamming with his grandparents;
 I took him and his friends to Pokemon;
and we went to the Shellfish Museum in Bideford with my parents;
We attended some Tyne Valley Oyster Festival festivities-
I volunteered at the canteen on trivia night.
C came back from camp (she had a good time!)
 and we saw the Oyster Festival Parade.
The kids had friends over;
C had a friend spend the night.
K and I went on a date night to Charlottetown.
We went to dinner and a movie- at Captain Jack's at the Yacht Club and then "Train Wreck".
The kids went to Shining Waters with my parents;
the family saw "Alice Through the Looking Glass" play in Charlottetown.
 N picked blueberries with his grandfathers;
and last night we went to dinner at the Summerside Yacht Club.
 (We missed K, who had to work.)

And I'm still working on C's closet.

I got some help from Dad to level out the top of the doorway.

Here is the progress.

It's taking forever!  With all the corners and angles!
 I've got to go over it again today. It may need a tiny bit of mud and then that's it!  On to sanding, priming and painting!

Have a great weekend! :-)

Tuesday- Finished Girl's Room

Mornin!

We finally got that storm that was supposed to come on Friday.  It just came later than expected!

We had a nice weekend.  With no school on Friday, we were able to get a lot of work done on C's room.

In order to paint, we moved a lot of stuff into the kitchen.  It stayed like this for 2 days.

The room is getting ready to be painted.

C's taking down the stuff from her bulletin board so we can paint the trim white.

Only one more little spot of pink to paint!

Here's how the room looks now.  C got rid of the top bunk, which went back into N's room.  (We dismantled the full size bed from N's room and put the mattress in the trailer, until we can figure out what to do with it.) The heart table that C and her friend painted got a coat of wax to help protect it. C only had to buy the blue blanket.  She used some money she got for Christmas.

Here it is Before.

Here's the bulletin board corner. We primed the outside of the shelves with High Hiding primer and did one coat of the Semi-gloss White paint, but you can still sorta see the window outlines where I drew then on with Sharpies. The desk top got sanded and finished in two coats of Semi-gloss white paint.  We'll see how it holds up. The secretary insert is on top of the desk.

Before

The ceiling is all finished.  I did one coat of primer mixed with flat white paint.  It covered fairly well, but still has a bit of a pink tint.  It was a lot of work and made me never want to paint a ceiling again!

Before

The closet corner.  The colorful curtain still goes with the new paint color.  The little shelf below the mirror also got a coat of wax.

Before

It seems a lot fresher now and not so crowded.  And C likes it so I'm glad about that!

Have a good week! :-)
