This weekend is the Acadian Festival with a parade on Sunday. Also, HH starts classes again on Friday and Saturday. Summer is almost over!

Friday Fun & Crown Moulding

Hi!

Today is DD's birthday party day (and night!)  It's our first sleep-over party. I'm hoping it's fun for all. Here's DD decorating her cake yesterday.

Another week of not so many projects.  I did finally get the crown moulding up in DD's room.
 Here's the corner before:
Here's another corner:
And before:
I still need to do one little bit of drywall by the door so that moulding is cut and just waiting to be put up.  And I also need to touch up the paint on the mouldings.
Have a great weekend! :-)

Friday Stuff

Hi!

Well, the projects have really slowed down this week. I thought last week I hadn't really done anything, but then remembered that I had. But this week I really can't think of anything.

I've been cleaning out the storage room, so that's something.

HH got a new reel mower that doesn't use gas or electricity.  So far it's great!  Now I'll have no excuse to cut the grass!  Before, with our ancient gas mower, I could never start it so I had a great excuse to not cut the grass while HH wasn't home. ;-)

I'm trying to root some virginia creeper inside. This was on Aug 4.
It's so hardy outside, I thought it would be super easy to root, but it's not doing so great. I had to cut some more pieces to put in. Here it is today:

I've been reading some Sarah Susanka books,

and getting some inspiration.

I wanted to tie together the windows and doors in the back room, but couldn't quite figure out how to do it. I tried to do it with curtains after nixing the idea of window pelmets.

Then, I found this picture and I think a headband is my solution!
This will be a project for the future!

Also, here's a picture of a barn door from one of the books:
And here's another barn door pic I found on East Coast Creative:
This is another project for the future, as I'm still gonna sew my dropcloth to look sail-like!

Have a great weekend!  :-)

Tasty Tuesday

Hi!

We had a great weekend with the Tyne Valley Oyster Festival- parade on Saturday and Fireworks on Sunday!

HH and DS went canoeing up the river on Sunday and we all went out on the pond yesterday. We had planned to all go on the river, but there were thunder clouds and thunder in the distance and we didn't want to get caught up in a storm on the river!

Last week we tried to eat up a lot of freezer stuff and it worked well. Now today is shopping day and here's the menu for the week:

  • Mon- Pasta with Sundried Tomato Sauce, Boiled Beet Greens
  • Tues- Haystacks Homemade Chili with Fritos
  • Wed-Stir Fry Veggies (Vegetarian Family Cookbook pg 149) with Chicken and Fried Rice
  • Thurs- Frozen Chickpeas Moghali, Rice Roast Chicken, Potatoes, Cauliflower & Frozen Chicken/Potato Patties
  • Fri- Pizza Out to Yacht Club
  • Sat- Froz Burgers, Sausage Spaghetti, Garlic Fingers
  • Sun- Lentils Frozen Burgers, Sausages
Here's last year's meal plan:
  • Mon- Pasta, Beet Greens (haha- same as this week!!)
  • Tues-Burgers
  • Wed- Haddock
  • Thurs-Ramen
  • Fri- Leftover
  • Sat- Pizza
  • Sun- ?
Have a great week! :-)

More pillows and curtains

Hi!

It feels like I'm not getting a lot done this week, projectwise. I went to Charlottetown yesterday with HH who had to work there. I did a bit of browsing around. We had a good lunch at Seoul Food and I found some chili powder at a Chinese Grocery store.  Hopefully, that will be the right kind for kimchee!  We picked up DS from camp on the way home. He had a great week. When we arrived home the in-laws were here with DD.  Today is the Tyne Valley Oyster Festival Parade. I hope it doesn't rain.

Here are some things I've done this week.

I got my canvas for the back room/kitchen divider.

I hung it up, but it's not quite how I pictured it.
I want it to be more taut and sail-like, instead of a curtain.  Here's my inspiration again:

I bought some grommets on the way back from taking DS to camp.
I'm not sure the curtain hanger would hold a big wooden board, so I might not be able to have that on top.  After I put the grommets on the canvas, maybe I'll use a dowel.  I can tie the curtain to it with rope thru the grommets and glue the rope to the dowel so it stays straight.  We used small dowels when we had the curtain rod in our bedroom and it worked fine.

In other news, I love piping!  I used piping on the wing chair for the first time. I  wanted to make some pillows using leftover canvas from the couch with piping from the striped wing chair fabric. Since I didn't have enough leftover striped fabric to do bias piping I just sewed it using straight cuts.  Here's a tutorial I used for adding piping to an envelope pillow.

Here's a picture of the piping sewn onto the front of the pillow.
Here's a picture of the finished product. I made two!

 Close-up of the piping! :-)
Have a great weekend! :-)

Boy's Desk

Here's a project I did for DS a few years ago.

My FIL got a desk from a friend, but it needed a little TLC.

I lightly sanded, then primed with Zinsser Odorless Oil Based Stain Blocker, Interior, White.

After letting it dry, I painted with Red latex color matched to these hooks (from the Target Restore & Restyle Collection).

Here's a younger DS helping with the painting!

However, the paint peeled. I think because it hadn't cured for 30 days.

So, I sanded the top

and painted with Grey Latex Floor Paint/Primer.  I wanted the edges to be white, like the star hooks, so I painted the edges white over the grey. I thought I could sand the red away and reveal the white. (I really like the look of the grey, white and red! :-))

I painted the red and sanded the edges.  This didn't work that great because you could see the edge of the white under the red about an inch away from the edge and it sanded away to the grey. Perhaps I could've rubbed a candle on the edges or used vaseline so the red wouldn't stick.

Anyway, I ended up using a white Latex paint pen on the edges.  This worked well.

I sealed the top with a Semi-gloss Polycrylic.  What I learned from this was: it's too glossy for my liking; use a foam brush, not a roller; and be careful sanding out the bubbles because it leaves streaks.

I finished it up with another coat of polycrylic.

I kept the original handles after cleaning them up.  Here's how it looks today:
 And here' the side:
