Here's a project I did for DS a few years ago.
My FIL got a desk from a friend, but it needed a little TLC.
I lightly sanded, then primed with Zinsser Odorless Oil Based Stain Blocker, Interior, White.
After letting it dry, I painted with Red latex color matched to these hooks (from the Target Restore & Restyle Collection).
Here's a younger DS helping with the painting!
However, the paint peeled. I think because it hadn't cured for 30 days.
So, I sanded the top
and painted with Grey Latex Floor Paint/Primer. I wanted the edges to be white, like the star hooks, so I painted the edges white over the grey. I thought I could sand the red away and reveal the white. (I really like the look of the grey, white and red! :-))
I painted the red and sanded the edges. This didn't work that great because you could see the edge of the white under the red about an inch away from the edge and it sanded away to the grey. Perhaps I could've rubbed a candle on the edges or used vaseline so the red wouldn't stick.
Anyway, I ended up using a white Latex paint pen on the edges. This worked well.
I sealed the top with a Semi-gloss Polycrylic. What I learned from this was: it's too glossy for my liking; use a foam brush, not a roller; and be careful sanding out the bubbles because it leaves streaks.
I finished it up with another coat of polycrylic.
I kept the original handles after cleaning them up. Here's how it looks today:
And here' the side:
