Hello!
I just finished my first "paid" makeover!
After I did my MIL's table, the word got out (to the relatives) that I'm a fantastic re-finisher! So, K's first-cousin-once-removed needed her stair landing re-done and I re-did it.
After I did my MIL's table, the word got out (to the relatives) that I'm a fantastic re-finisher! So, K's first-cousin-once-removed needed her stair landing re-done and I re-did it.
I used the hand sander that kept switching off when I was re-finishing my MIL's table.
I hadn't realized I'd be removing carpet glue, but I had taken some 30 grit belt sander sandpaper, that I cut to fit (1/3 of the pad of) the hand sander, and I started sanding with that. I sanded and sanded and all that sanding caused the sander to overheat. I started in the morning on Wednesday and stayed a couple hours til the sander wouldn't start. I tested the sander at home in the afternoon and it worked, so I went back, until the sander quit again! Here's how the little floor looked when I left.
So close to being finished!
Thursday I tried to start the sander, but it was broken! Luckily, K was in Charlottetown, so he was able to get me a brand new sander (for an early birthday present)!
I went back today (Friday) and finished up with the new sander.
I think the floor turned out nice! (No after picture, but you can probably imagine it.) I wasn't planning on charging the "customer", and told her I was doing it as a favor, but she gave me some money, so I accepted. :-)
Here's what I learned:
Don't use a hand sander to remove old carpet glue or it will overheat and break your sander :-(
Buy a nice new sander!
If you see scratches on the wood, don't switch over to 220 grit sandpaper, keep sanding with 120 and then switch to 220.
Have a great day! :-)
